Episode 044: Two hosts at the price of one

Makke is back for another co-hosted episode, coming at you from cloudy MalmΓΆ, Sweden. This time we bring you no less than three tunes from the new "Sounds of SceneSat" compilation, along with some other remixes, and a great SID tune by AMJ. Plus, we catch up on whats been happening in the world of C64-related music during the past six months. Also, Jan tries to stop talking about Twitter.

  1. I really enjoyed the music, but you could easily cut down on the talk during the show without diluting the product. After all it’s the music we come here for …

  2. as always great show, and if this is the new release frequency, i will duplicate my comment from the last show.
I guess it is time to look forwad to the classic christmas edition with the golden axe remix as end tune.

  3. @Kasper: If it’s all music you’re after be sure to check out the 8-Bit Mayhem podcast.

@Fac: Glad you liked it. I look forward to you mocking my release schedule again next year. πŸ™‚

  4. I am glad you are back I have a quick question is makke the same makkeas the crazy komets remix on OCremix? Or a different one.

  5. It wasn’t a gift, no. I had been thinking about getting one ever since I first played Portal on a mates Xbox 360. But the idea got shelved until I heard that Fallout 3 was coming out for it. From then on I just knew that I had to have one by October 30th. πŸ™‚

  6. Great podcast Jan. I disagree with Kasper, I love listening to the discussion bits and wouldn’t mind MORE of that. Good to have Makke on there, too, and with a co-host, what’s the point if you guys don’t talk?

After all, if all I want is the tunes I can just download and play stuff from Remix.Kwed.Org, etc.

So you were a Wasteland fan? Amazing I have yet to try/review that game. I need to put it on my short list. Mass Effect ate up a lot of personal time, so I’m sure Fallout 3 would do the same to me, but I’m a PC gamer, not a console gamer (I still consider the C64 a type of PC, never did like the Nintendo type stuff). Just something about using a keyboard that appeals to me. πŸ™‚

Hope the next episode doesn’t take too long to come out!

  7. Oh – I’ll admit if someone were to make a good Ultima sequel (not an MMORPG UO type) only on a console I would buy an Xbox360 or PS3 in a heartbeat. πŸ™‚ After all, I did buy a used gameboy in Japan just to play a somewhat cheesy Ultima game on it.

  8. Robinson, I’m a *huge* Wasteland fan. So much so that I haven’t been bothered to even look at RPGs that weren’t set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland since it came out. After Wasteland it’s been Fallout all the way. And to this day I still get goosebumps every time Ron Perlman says “War… War never changes!”.

Also, fantasy RPGs just don’t have the same appeal as something that will let you empty a full clip on three approaching pistoleros, reducing them into a thin red paste. πŸ™‚

  9. Also glad that you dig the spoken part, whether I’ve discussing stuff with Makke, or talking directly to the listeners on my own.

I’ve always felt that the C64 Take-away should be about more than ‘just’ the music. Especially seing as I (like a lot of other people) will listen to every remix out there at least once anyway. πŸ™‚

  10. Hi, started listening to the C64 take-away way back but had a break when I didn’t have any mobile music device. Now i got the iPhone, so now I had the chance to catch up with all the episodes! πŸ˜€

Great show, I must say! I like the mix of remixes, news, discussions and SIDs a lot and it’s always nice to hear new songs that I haven’t found yet! πŸ˜‰

You mentioned that SIDplayer was released to iPhone/iPod Touch – why I of course had to search for it! SIDplayer comes both in a “lite” version and a regular version, where the “lite” version only enables a few selected SIDs. The regular costs 22SEK, which feels like an affordable price – then you can download the entire HVSC and update it when new stuff comes up.
It works nicely so I really recommend it. It’s easy to search but it lacks a “playlist” function, but I guess a later release will remedy that! πŸ™‚

Keep up the good work! I hope to hear a new show before christmas! πŸ˜›

  11. Oh Portal! Yeah that’s a sweet game. And I can almost get it to run right!

Jan here’s an idea for a show…how about all the best Max Headroom remixes?

  12. @Kaj: Good to hear that you liked the show. And thanks for the report on the SID player – sounds like a must-have if I ever get hold of an iPhone. πŸ™‚

@Andrew: The timing of my Xbox purchase turned out to be impeccable, as the Live Arcade version of Portal was released a couple of days after I got the console (I never really cared for HL2/TF2 so I couldn’t be bothered to purchase The Orange Box just for Portal).

As for a Max Headroom special, it would be a short show: there’s only 6 remixes of it according to http://remix.kwed.org/?search=max+headroom. Plus the one by Marcel DonnΓ© that I played on episode 022, of course.

  13. GR8 Show guys~!

    -Seth
ps- Jan, I got an xbox 360 for the VERY same reason! ahaha! Long live Wasteland!!

  14. Have to agree with you, Andrew. That comparison is totally unfair. Whatever sound chip the iPhone has, it clearly can’t compare against the MOS 6581 SID. πŸ™‚
