Episode 038: Baby, it’s hot in here!

This time it’s the usual blend of classic SIDs and remixes. I also preview the new album from Reyn Ouwehand, talk about the upcoming Back In Time Live event, catch up on news and listener feedback, and play you a Nelly Futardo track[*] without getting in trouble with the RIAA.

[*] The Nelly Futardo track in question ripped off a C64 track without asking for permission or even crediting the original composer/performer. The remix featured on todays episode is based on the same source material – but I’m giving full credit. In other words: back off, lawyers.

  4. Jan,
I was watching the original Transformers movie yestererday, and amid all the other 80’s music, I could have sworn I heard a SID chip playing. I looked at the movie box, and it read: Music Score By: Vince DiCola. After mucking about a bit in Google, I found the following bit of 8-bit trivia:

“Subsong 2” from the Commodore 64 game Turrican is actually the song “Escape” from The Transformers: The Movie soundtrack.

No wonder I was a Transformer fan; It’s the same reason I’m a fan of The Takeaway.

  5. Well spotted, leeand00. It’s the other way around, though – Turrican was released 4 years after The Transformers movie. Often composers on the C64 were inspired (to put it mildly) by whatever music they were listening to at the time. Something that was very rarely mentioned on the credits screens for the various games.

I had the same thing happen to me when I listened to the soundtrack from that old David Bowie / Jennifer Connelly movie, “The Labyrinth”. I just knew that I had heard the “Goblin Battle” track on the C64 back in the day. Took me forever to figure out that Ben Daglish covered it for The Vikings on the breadbox.

  6. The original track, titled “Acidjazzed Evening”, is a chiptune -style 4-channel Amiga module composed by Finnish demoscener Janne Suni .

  7. True. Janne Suni did the original tune on the Amiga. Glenn Rune Gallefoss got Suni’s permission to turn it into “Acid Jazz” on the C64. The latter is the version that was sampled for the Nelly Futardo track.
