Episode 064: So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

Hey-hey-hey! It’s the 64th episode of the C64 Take-away, and a very special one at that. On June 16th 2005, I released the very first episode into the wild. And now, exactly 20 years later, it’s time to wrap up and move on – and what better episode number than 64 to end on? And what better way to do so, than with a selection of my personal favorites?

I have had a blast spreading the Commodore Love and interacting with everyone over the years. But it’s also lingered at the back of my mind more or less constantly since day one. Curating the mix of C64 remixes and SID chiptunes for each episode has taken up a LOT of time and energy. So for the better part of a year I’ve thought about this being the perfect opportunity to let it go and free up the mental space. That said; The conversation doesn’t need to end here, so if you feel like it, then by all means get in touch – either here, on Mastodon or via e-mail. And if you don’t, no problem.

Take care, stay safe, bye-bye.

  1. End of an era
and i gotten 20 years older listening to good Commodore 64 remixes and Dane english by Kwed πŸ™‚

hope you keep hosting the C64 Remix site atleast πŸ˜‰

  2. Thank you for the C64 podcasts through the years! They were certainly enjoyable. *Applause* πŸ™‚

  3. All the best Jan.

Yours was probably the first podcast I downloaded when I moved across to an iPod from a range of Creative MP3 players that could no longer compete with Apple. It seemed so modern and counter-culture to update a podcast feed on iTunes and download from my PC and then listen on my commute to work.

I’m still going to keep the feed in my podcast player in the hope of a Christmas special one year. Playing the golden axe Christmas remix is part of my tradition now too.

Thanks for all the years of spreading retro vibes, sid tunes and of course, the commodore love.

  4. Thank you for the kind words, all.

Don’t worry about the podcast archive or Remix.Kwed.Org going anywhere. And if that day should ever come, I’ll be sure to make the files available on The Internet Archive.

  5. Thank you for the kind words, Chris.

Ah yes, the Creative MP3 player. I recall looking into one of those back in the day. My first MP3 capable device was a Nokia 5510. It only had 64 Mb of memory and a *really* slow USB connection, so it took about 15 minutes to update the files on it. That all changed when a good friend showed me his new-fangled iPod. That said, when I got one myself, I was still using “Juice” on a Windows PC to download podcasts and sync them over to the iPod by way of another 3rd party app, which I’ve forgotten the name of. In the early days of smartphones starting to become a thing, when we didn’t yet have independant app developers, I distinctly recall talking to people about how amazing it would be if we could just subscribe and download podcasts straight from those devices, without having to use a computer. And here we are. Using modern tech, to spreading the word about retro tech.

Markus Schneiders “Golden Axe Christmas Edition” has also become tradition here. I’ve often caught myself humming it when December came around. Even at work, where there’s really no one to share the Commodore Love with.

    Unlike here. ❀️

  6. I’m sad that right now I am listening to last episode ever of your podcast. I confess, I haven’t listened to all 64 episodes, but I listened to quite a few – and I enjoyed every minute of it. The episodes were just the right size (about an hour each) and contained just the right mix of music vs. chat.

I hope you’ll keep this website running, though, because looking back at your notes of the episodes, they’re a fascinating time capsule of so many things that have happened during the last 20 years.

Thank you for the memories, and thank you for all your efforts throughout the decades to keep both the SID music and the remix scene alive!

  7. It is always bittersweet when something good ends, thank you for delivering great content and a great selection of tunes!
I wish you success in whatever you do going forward.
    Greetings from northern Sweden!

  8. I have listened since day one and in recent years, when episodes became less frequent, it always put a smile on my face when my podcast catcher let me know a new episode dropped. The same thing happened for episode 64…. And then it was the bomb that dropped instead. Yet, it was still an amazing episode despite the bad news.

In the early days, I used iTunes with an iPod video for my podcast listening. I still have that iPod. My podcast lists have followed me from that to many phones and yours was one of the first I always added when upgrading, just hoping another episode would stumble in. I was never disappointed. And as mentioned above, I will not unsubscribe, just in case!

So, a bittersweet goodbye from Travelers Rest, SC, USA. Please take care and stay safe my friend.

  9. Thanks LaLa,
RKO and my other contributions to the scene isn’t going anywhere. And good point about the shownotes being a timecapsule. I hadn’t thought of them like that, to be honest. And that makes me want to preserve them even more.
On the plus side, you’ve got the perfect opportunity to catch up on any unlistened episodes – or even starting over from the beginning. πŸ™‚
Either way, rest assured that there’s no plans to shut down the website. Apart from a few mentions of upcoming concerts or crowdfunding projects, the chatty bits aren’t that time-sensitive. So I’m hoping that new people will still discover the podcast going forward.

  10. Thanks for the kind words, @eldphm and Christopher.

Trying to come up with a reply, but I’m pretty much lost for words. ❀️❀️
