Episode 045

Holy rapid release schedule, Batman! Another C64 Take-away already? Makke and Jan are back to entertain you with even more carefully selected C64 SIDs and remixes – including an 8-bit tribute to the man who came up with the moonwalk, and a trip back to the early days of remixing. Also, we talk about the BBC tuning into the chiptune/remix scene, and Apple not wanting people to run emulated 6510 assembly code on the iPhone.

  1. This was a very nice surprise to find on my iTunes this morning! Loved the MJ SID off the bat, and the welcome banter from the DJs (so glad you didn’t cave to those who say you talk “too much”).

Very frustrated with the iTunes app store C64 emulator problems. How many decades must pass before people realize that the C64 hardware, not to mention the decaying floppy disks and tapes are going to be dead without methods of enjoyment like this? Perhaps it will just be a minor speedbump in the scheme of things.

I also noticed to my disappointment that the “easy to use” Ubuntu Linux comes with a crippled version of VICE that is missing essential files and would not be easy for a casual user to find. Thanks be to .rpm files for Redhat and SUSE…

  2. No comments on the release schedule this time. (Though you could make a habit of releasing every month πŸ™‚ )

I will however say that I have got a new ringtone on my phone. I couldn’t help my self but to cut your jingle out of the podcast, and download it to my phone. Who said geek? πŸ˜€

  3. Congratulations on your new ringtone, Fac. May it get you many an odd look. πŸ™‚

Unfortunately both Makke and I have busy schedules for next couple of months, so you might have to wait a bit for the 46th installment.

  4. Whoa! That episode sure came out fast, thinking of the time between the last one. πŸ˜‰ Nice episode and good idea with a “classic remix”!
Too bad with the C64 app for iPhone.. πŸ™ That would have been really nice!

  5. So glad your back in a more “regular slot”, and what an awesome podcast loved MJ SID and Branko Balsic – Airscape Ride awesome, hope you dont stay away too long.

  6. Awesome episode Jan and Makke!! Listened to the latest ep and thoroughly enjoyed every second of it!

While there might not be a c64 iPhone app… Android phones will be! woo!

Here’s a link to the news article:

    Awesome news!

Thanks for the episode guys, keep up the great work!

-John (from Adelaide, South Australia, and yes, i did listen to this ep in the car!)

  7. Thanks for the link, John. Interesting read.

I tried to check the Android Marketplace for emulators, but I just can’t find my way around it. They claim you can browse the available apps but all I see is top free/paid apps and no search function. You’d think Google could do better than that.

Do you have a direct link for the C64 emulator?

  8. I guess that means there are 2 people in Adelaide (Australia) driving around with SIDs, c64remixes and the c64takeaway playing in their car.

BTW: Jan and Makke, I hope things are going great for the both of you.
    catch’ya

  9. Unfortunately Jan, looks like the ‘website’ version of the Android Marketplace is more of a ‘Look! This is what we are capable of!”, rather than a definitive list of all available softwares.

From what I understand, you get the programs via your Android powered handset that has the Android Marketplace installed on it.

I’m getting a HTC Magic over here soon (my birthday soon, yayyy for me :)) so guess which program I’ll be installing first πŸ˜‰

    -John

  10. @John: If that is indeed the case, then it’s the worst marketing stunt I’ve seen in ages. How do they expect customers to fall in love with the Android platform if we’re not allowed to have a proper look at what’s available for it before purchasing? Browsing the productivity section on the iTunes Store was what made me want an iPhone in the first place (well, that and the SID player :)). That being said, if the iPhone wasn’t around I would totally buy an Android handset – and vice versa.

Getting off my soapbox, it just dawned on me that upcoming HTC Hero is also powered by Android. Only comes in white as well, but at least it’s not as ugly as the Magic. πŸ™‚

  11. I check in on this podcast “now and then”; a frequency which often coincides with the intermittent releases πŸ™‚

Always enjoy the music and banter, cheers to the hosts.

  12. Cheers Analoq!

If you want one less thing to check up on now and then you could always keep up with us using the RSS feed or e-mail announcements. πŸ™‚

  13. I typically avoid things which make my life easier, but in this case I’ll make an exception. Subscribed in iTunes πŸ™‚

  14. @Jan: Yeah it’s really really backwards isn’t it.

Admittedly, I’m a very big open source software fan so Android has appealed to me more than the iPhone (far too closed for my liking, just look how my Apple push for everyone with an iPod/iPhone to use (and only use) iTunes).

Still… I’ll keep you posted about the Android version of the c64 emulator once I get my hands on a handset πŸ™‚

    -John

P.S. Since I first emailed you, I’ve gotten up to Episode 28! I’ve been listening at work while I work πŸ™‚

  15. @John: Big open source fan myself, and Apples handling of the the C64 emulator really bugs me (and the rest of world, it seems). Now, if I could just lug both an iPhone and a HTC Hero around my worries would be over. πŸ™‚

  16. Thanks again for the mention Jan. I just remembered I haven’t downloaded the 2008 RKO torrent archive yet =O SO I’m going to do that now – it will give me something new to listen too when playing the various board games on Xbox Live Arcade πŸ™‚

  17. Hi Jan Lund,

Dont you use your myspace site anymore, I try to get you into my “friends” list for the second time, but Its already been half a year since you last visited myspace.

greets and all the best, Adam

  18. @Adam: Guilty as charged. I don’t log into myspace regularly, so friend requests unfortunately tend to slip through the net. Anyway, welcome to our friend-list. πŸ™‚

  19. You and me both, John. Unfortunately everyday life is sorta getting in the way of it.

That being said, Makke and I do have have a tentative and not-to-distant date set for recording episode #46. More news when it happens.
